30000 Leagues Undersea True Tales of a Submariner and Deep Submergence Pilot eBook Tom Vetter Reviews
This book is a splendid collection of short stories from the author's childhood through adulthood, including his amazing and dangerous career as a U.S. Navy submariner -- both on diesel subs and deep submergence vehicles. For stories bound and limited by the truth and facts, these are truly amazing and gripping. One might imagine sitting around the campfire at Tom's cabin in Minnesota (read the book to get the reference) and hearing these stories in the same sort of non-linear style used in the book. It's all very real. I recommend this book for anyone interested in U.S. history, Navy history, submarines, or just a good story. There is even some romance as he tells how he met the love of his life.
Overall, this volume has a ton of mostly interesting stories about the author, as penned in his own words. It's a lot to take in though, and the reader can get weighted down with all the technical nautical terms, but Vetter does have a good sense of humor which lightens the mood. Now, what I REALLY don't like about the book is the following...
NOTE to the discerning reader This book contains a lot of foul language. Also, it shares a few scenes that are intended for a mature audience. The author states that he cleaned up the stories in some cases, and thank goodness for that -- but there's still several stories that I just skimmed through instead of reading.
For me, the book just isn't as exciting as I had hoped for.

I expected much more to this book. It was entertaining , and fun, but with far too little time spent on dives.
He tells it like it was! Deep submergence, diesel boats and the "boomer" a Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine. Great memories of shipmates, deep sea adventures and service during the cold war.
Courage, honor and integrity fill the pages of this book.
These amazing stories allow you to travel into the deep and experience the world like you have never done before. Enjoy the opportunity to learn more about submarines and the navy.
Dare to dive into the pages - you won't regret it!
Aside from a slight case of claustrophobia, I loved this memoir. Having nothing of the adventurer in me, I'm dazzled and grateful for men like Vetter and his crew-mates who do scary, exciting jobs for our country. The writing is clear and graceful, so the feeling comes through loud and clear.
I purchased this book as "research" for a project I'm working on and it's such a fun read that I keep forgetting to take notes! If you're like me a total landlubber who's fascinated by the deep blue sea, you'll likely enjoy this book as much as I have! You'll follow Mr. Vetter's journey from his childhood in rural Minnesota into the Navy and beyond. His insights are fascinating and his wit is sharp. He shares technical information in a way that's easy to understand and takes you on a journey to the bottom of the ocean that you can immerse yourself in, and there's even pictures! Two thumbs up, I definitely recommend this one!
