I am ordering this book for my oldest granddaughter Outside (lower 48). I am a long-time Alaskan who has lived all over the State. Over the years, I have encountered several types of bears native to the Great Land: ursus arctos, ursus a. horribilis, and ursus maritimus. Although I've been on Kodiak Island several times, I've never seen a live specimen of this giant. I once observed a solitary polar bear on an island near Nome (well known as the mascot of UAF [Nanook, or nanuuq]). My hardcopy of Sacred Paw is several decades old, and I use it as an excellent reference for a summary of exactly what its title indicates: the scientific introduction of nature and habitats, some global cultural myths, and examples in literature. The criticism that it doesn't provide us with enough stories is, in my opinion, misplaced: there are plenty of other good books which focus on AI/AN cultural legends and myths regarding bears. One book can't do it all. This book is a gem and I highly recommend it. The narrative is very educational, and the illustrations are well done... something to pass on to our children and grandchildren. With climate change threatening our regions this far north, we are already seeing changes in bear habitats here and in northern Canada. Sacred Paw will help raise awareness.

The Sacred Paw The Bear in Nature Myth and Literature Paul Shepard Barry Sanders Gary Snyder 9780140194548 Books Reviews

It's been many years since I first read this book, but it has left an indelible impression upon me. I often share the story behind the fairy tale The Woman Who Married A Bear, as described in this fascinating and worthwhile read. I have had the great pleasure of being present at a Bear Dance and feel much more connected to this awe inspiring material because of this excellent book. Don't be put off by that earlier negative review - this one is well worth the time to absorb and contemplate.
Bears are such remarkable creatures and revered throughout history. The Sacred Paw attempts to tell us some of this but it reads too much like someone's thesis. There is no narrative - story telling - and so what should be a valuable book falls flat. I hope there is an author somewhere considering a worthy book.
